Olivia Wells Speaks Out About Her NYC Experience
- High School Senior
- National American Miss Nebraska Teen
- Aspiring commercial model
Why did you decide to participate in the NYC Experience?
Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a model or in the fashion industry somehow! I’m so glad I participated in the NYC Experience.
Did your focus change once you were in NYC? If so, how?
I always knew that being in the fashion industry was a tough job, but listening to all of the speakers we met truly opened my eyes to how tough you have to be and how hard you have to work to be get on top.
Talk about three lessons/ah-ha moments you came away with.
When we met with Charlie from FFT and he told us that nothing is about us in the commercial print industry. We are selling a product and it is not about us.
Everyone we spoke with told us their story about how they got to the top. Every single one of them worked their tail off and gave 110% effort. I learned that you must have thick skin and not give up when someone rejects you because it will happen.
And lastly, I took away how graceful Karen Lee can walk and I now strive to walk(or glide) like her!!!
What was your very favorite part? Least favorite?
My favorite part was shooting with Shawn Ehlers.
It was such a fun atmosphere and helping her bounce light taught me a lot about the other side of the camera!
And for my least favorite part…I don’t really have one. I enjoyed everything and soaked up every bit of information I could.
Is there anything you would change about the trip?
I wish we would have been able to go to SoHo, I would somehow add that into the already jam-packed schedule!
What advice would you give to someone considering the NYC Experience? Why?
You MUST be able to adapt and have thick skin because the fashion industry is extremely blunt and straight-forward. If you cannot take criticism or rejection, the fashion industry may not be your best interest.
What else would you like me to know about your NYC Experience?
I’m so happy I decided to go on the trip. I knew I wanted to be involved in the fashion industry and this trip made me want it so much more!
